Sierra Leone is a country of extraordinary history, vibrant culture, natural beauty, and living traditions.
The Sierra Leone Heritage Journey invites you to experience it differently.
Over seven nights, we'll move beyond traditional sightseeing to experience Sierra Leone through its historic places, communities, cuisine, traditions, artisans, landscapes, and people.
But this journey is also about what happens between the experiences. Through guided storytelling and reflection, you'll have space to consider what you're seeing, hearing, learning, and carrying with you.
For some travelers, Sierra Leone may represent discovery. For others, return. For others still, a deeper connection to African and diasporic history and culture.
Wherever your story begins, this journey invites you to experience Sierra Leone beyond the surface.

History • Markets • Stories
Today, Freetown becomes our classroom.
We'll travel through historic corridors by keke and on foot, experiencing the city at street level while learning more about the places and stories that have shaped it.
At the Sierra Leone National Museum, a curated conversation introduces us to artifacts, memory, and the ways history is interpreted and preserved.
We'll continue to the historic Cotton Tree site, reflecting on its symbolism and the stories of continuity, loss, and renewal connected to this important Freetown landmark.
At Big Market, meet local craftspeople and discover the meaning and artistry behind country cloth, basketry, beads, and other traditional work.
An optional rooftop lunch offers an opportunity to enjoy Freetown from another perspective.
Later, our first storytelling workshop introduces simple techniques for capturing sensory detail, voice, and setting, helping us preserve not only what we saw, but how the day felt.
Overnight: Freetown
History • Remembrance • Reflection
Today brings us to one of the most historically significant experiences of the journey.
We'll travel by boat to Bunce Island, accompanied by a licensed guide and historian who will help bring context to the history held within this place. This day is held with reverence.
As we walk the historic ruins and spaces of remembrance, we'll encounter a difficult but essential chapter in the history connecting Sierra Leone, the transatlantic slave trade, and the African diaspora.
There will be intentional quiet time for personal reflection and writing, allowing each traveler to experience the site in their own way.
During our return to Freetown, we'll have space to process what we've encountered together.
That evening's reflection turns toward remembrance and testimony through the question:
What must never be forgotten?
Overnight: Freetown
Welcome • Exchange • Naming Ceremony
Today, we'll travel to a Mende village, where we'll be welcomed into the community and introduced to local elders. Through conversation, music, drumming, dance, and a shared meal, we'll experience traditions not simply as observers, but through genuine moments of connection.
You'll also have an opportunity to participate alongside community members through a hands-together experience, which may include a school reading hour, garden activity, or craft circle with local weavers and dyers.
A meaningful highlight of the day is a traditional Naming Ceremony, where you'll receive a local name along with its meaning and lineage notes, creating a personal remembrance of your time within the community.
As the day draws to a close, we'll gather in gratitude and experience the rich oral tradition of call-and-response storytelling with a community griot.
This is a day centered not simply on what we see, but on the people we meet, the traditions shared with us, and the connections we carry forward.
Overnight: Freetown
Beauty • Restoration • Reflection
After several days of history, culture, and connection, today offers space to experience another side of Sierra Leone.
We'll travel to the beautiful No. 2 River Beach, where green landscapes, river, mountains, and the Atlantic create a striking Sierra Leone coastal settings.
A guided shoreline walk invites us to slow down and take in the natural beauty surrounding us and time for personal reflection.
We'll gather for a fresh seafood and seasonal fruit lunch.
That evening, we'll reconnect in a small group to share selected reflections and writings inspired by our time along the coast.
Today creates an intentional shift in the rhythm of the journey: a moment to rest, restore, and simply experience the beauty of Sierra Leone.

Reconnect • Restore • Remember
Today invites us to begin gathering the stories, memories, and connections the journey has opened.
Through the Reverse Journey workshop, you'll explore the crossings within your own personal and family story.
Time to return to a museum or archive experience to revisit a selected artifact or oral history, allowing space to look again with the perspective gained throughout the week.
An optional Craft & Commerce Tour offers an opportunity to meet local makers, shop with intention, and learn more about ethical purchasing and fair-pricing practices while supporting Sierra Leonean artisans.
Later, we'll gather for a Rehearsal Circle, with spoken-word coaching to help travelers shape the reflections and stories they may wish to share during our closing experience.
This is a day to reconnect the threads of the journey: personal, historical, cultural, and ancestral.

Creator, The Heritage Journeys™ Collection
I created The Heritage Journeys™ Collection from a belief that some destinations deserve to be experienced differently.
Heritage travel should not simply take us to historic places. It should create opportunities to understand the people, culture, relationships, and stories that give those places meaning.
For travelers of the African diaspora, those experiences can carry an even deeper significance. But every traveler who joins us is invited to experience Sierra Leone with respect and a desire for meaningful connection.
That is why each Heritage Journey is curated in relationship with trusted destination partners and local expertise with cultural respect, meaningful connection, and exceptional care at the center.
From the moment you reserve your space through your return home, My Destination Guru will be there to guide your journey with thoughtful planning, personal service, and attentive support.
This is more than a trip to Sierra Leone. It is an invitation to experience the destination beyond the surface.
